Bulgaria expects record levels of rose oil production

The season of rose – picking was opened in Wednesday in the Bulgarian Rose Valley. It promises record levels of rose oil production, which is used for the production of the most high quality perfumes, famous worldwide. This was announced by representatives of the local industry.
This year for the first time rose blossoms will be picked up from 3 500 hectare gardens, said Nedyalko Nedkov, head of the Rose Institute in Kazanlak, the centre of the rose valley, and quoted by “International Herald Tribune”. The government invested over 50 million Euro, during the last 5 years, to expand the rose massifs with over 2500 hectares and invested in new installations for manufacturing”, he added. Picking up rose blossoms and rose oil production is an intensive activity, which includes vapour distillation from the rose flowers.
The total production of rose oil this year may reach the record 2500 kg. In comparison, during the last year the quantity was 1500 kg. The Bulgarian rose oil traditionally is used for the production of high quality perfumes. The prices of the rose oil on the world markets can reach 4000 Eur, per kilogram. It is considered that over 5000 kinds of roses exists in the world, but just a few of them have the specific aroma, which is highly appreciated by the perfume manufacturers. The Bulgarian oil- bearing rose was cultivated more than 300 years ago in the Rose valley. Bulgaria is one of the biggest rose oil producers together with turkey, Morocco, France and Itally.
