Madara Horseman International Biennale Starts Today

News.bg, 21 Aug 2007

The third international biennale on the “Madara Horseman” sculpture starts today, informed Radio Shoumen.

Sculptors from Hungary, Greece, Romania, Macedonia and Bulgaria will take part in the event.

The opening is in front of the Natural-Historical Reserve “Madara”.

The sculptors will model their creations under the Madara Horseman for 10 days. The closing of the Third international biennale is on 31 August.

The Madara Horseman is a UNESCO World heritage monument. At a height of 23 meters the figure of a horseman has been hewn into the sheer rock, piercing a lion with his spear, and flanked on both sides by inscriptions reflecting the military and political power of the First Bulgarian Empire.

This symbol of Bulgarian statesmanship is the only one of its kind in the whole of Europe. Monumental in design and execution, the Madara Horseman is a magnificent message from the early Middle Ages.
