Madara Horseman to Attract More Tourists

Standart daily, 28 Feb 2011

In 2009, Madara Horseman was chosen as Bulgaria’s emblem. As a site of world significance it has been put under UNESCO aegis. Annually it is visited by 50000 people while its capacity is for over 500000.

Shumen Municipality, on the territory of which the Horseman is situated, has started procedures via Bulgaria’s Ministry of Culture to obtain rights for management and maintenance. The opportunities for attracting financing from the EU funds are huge, the project we have been working on is for about 6 million levs, according to Shuman Mayor, Krassimir Kostov. The problem whose solution is still pending concerns the management of the Reserve as no subsidies can be received from the EU if the municipality is not in charge of the site.
