Bulgaria Celebrates Easter Day

VisitBulgaria.NET, April 29, 2008

On 27, 28 and 29 Arpil Bulgaria celebrates one of the most beautiful holidays in the country – Easter Day. Easter is a Christian holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

As a long-last holiday tradition Bulgarians dye eggs for health and luck on Easter. The first egg is always painted in red to symbolize the blood of Christ and is kept in the home to bring good luck and fertility. With the first red egg the grandmother also draws a cross on the foreheads of the kids, so that they are healthy during the whole year.
Traditionally, on Easter Eve the Bulgarians gather at midnight (Saturday/Sunday) in front of the church, candles in their hands. At 12.00 am they greet themselves with "Christos voskrese" (Christ has risen). The reply is "Voistina voskrese" (Indeed he has risen).
