The official opening of an eco project on the biggest Bulgarian island in Danube River near the town of Belene took place on the 23th of June. The project is powered by the World Bank with a donation of $7.5 mln.
Special canal-locks and canals are built. The facilities allow the high waters of the river to float the protected wet zones on the island and the conditions will be better for the fish population and for the birds, animals and plants which are threatened with extinction. The representative of the World Bank in Bulgaria Florian Fichtl was the official guest of the event. He said that the project is good not only for the nature and the Danube River but it will develop the tourism in the region.
This project is part of the Regional Initiative of the Danube Wet Zones Preservation. Such undertakings work successfully in Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Romania. The projects has already proved its positive influence over the biological diversity and the quality of the waters in Danube River.
