The summer is here

information by Sofia News Agency

The summer solstice arrives June 21 to mark the longest day and shortest night of the year for the northern hemisphere, a day people have celebrated for centuries.

The solstice, which marks the zenith of the sun's path, is expected in Bulgaria at 2:28 pm local time. The day will last 15 hours and 19 minutes on June 21.

The summer solstice comes three days before Bulgarians mark the Midsummer Day, widely known as Enyovden, a holiday related in traditional beliefs to herbs and their healing power.

On June 24 the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, after which the winter season starts moving closer. It is believed that if collected on his day herbs are especially beneficial as the sun boosts their healing power.

Bulgarian tradition has it that on Enyovden children and adults should roll in dewy fields or take a bath in rivers and brooks.

Midsummer is celebrated around the world and most often refers to the period of time centered upon the summer solstice or festivals honouring Saint John the Baptist.
