Bulgaria to co-ordinate tourism, secuirty under EU Strategy for Danube region

Bulgaria will promote tourism and oversee security in the Danube area as part of the European Union's strategy for the region, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said on February 3 2011.
Hahn named eleven priority areas and the countries and regions that will co-ordinate their implementation by drafting a work programme and identifying financial sources with other states involved and partners such as non-government organisations.

Bulgaria will take up the promotion of culture, tourism and people-to-people contacts together with Romania. The country will also work together with Germany to tackle security and organised crime.

The Danube region covers parts of eight EU countries, including Germany, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania, as well as six non-EU countries, in particular Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Ukraine and Moldova.
The strategy is aimed at ensuring a strong co-operation between countries, making optimal use of all EU funding available without allocating new funds, setting new rules or establishing new institutions.



The scheme, proposed by the Commission at the European Council's request, is expected to be endorsed by its member states during the Hungarian EU presidency in the first half of 2011.
