Bulgaria’s Finance Minister Simeon Djankov assured yesterday that the cabinet will allot 10M leva additional financing for ten of Bulgaria’s wonders. Minister Djankov made his statement just a few minutes after the final results in the national online vote for Bulgaria’s top ten cultural and historical sites became clear. The ranking was announced at a special discussion organized by The Standart daily in the National Palace of Culture. Members of the cabinet, mayors, MPs, historians, archaeologists, representatives of tourism and the media were invited to take part in the discussion.
The coastal town of Sozopol tops the list thanks to the relics of St John the Baptist discovered last year on St. Ivan Island. The Thracian fortress of Perperikon and Old Nessebar take second and third position respectively. The first Bulgarian capital – Pliska, dropped out of the top ten by a narrow margin of several points.
The funds allotted by the government will be invested in infrastructure projects and promotion of Bulgaria’s cultural and historical treasures.
