Restoration of Roman and Medieval Fortresses in Bulgaria

Gurmen municipality near the town of Gotse Delchev in the Pirin Mountain region will launch the reconstruction of the antique Roman town of Nikopolis ad Nestrum.

Gurmen will co-operate with Greek Agios Athanasios (St Atanas) municipality.

The town will be preserved and turned into tourism attraction. Illumination, security and video control will be provided for the whole area.

Nikopolis ad Nestum spreads on 100 000 sq m. It was built in 105 to honour Roman emperor Trajan.

EU’s PHARE programme for trans-border co-operation between Bulgaria and Greece will fund the restoration, Focus news agency reported. The project is worth 273 500 euro.

Under the same programme, Petrich municipality will restore Samuil fortress national park. Restoration begins in June 2007. The restoration will cost 263 000 euro.
