For the sixth consecutive year, Plovdiv welcomes art lovers from around Bulgaria to its annual Night of Museums and Galleries. Following the overwhelming popularity of the event in previous editions, the program this year is organized in two days – 24 and 25 September (Friday and Saturday), starting at 7.00 p.m. on each of the days and closing at 1.00 in the morning.
There are three main programs to choose from: Museums and Galleries (on 24 September), Culture at Large (on 25 September) – organized jointly with the cultural institutes, bookshops, informal art spaces and clubs in town, and Arts in the Open (on 24 and 25 September). All three programs are simultaneously entertaining and serious, educational and fun. 25 September will be the Children’s Night of Museums and Galleries (from 11.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.).
In the last six years, the Night of Museums and Galleries in Plovdiv has grown into one of the biggest art events in Bulgaria – an artistic landmark for both the country and the region. Following the example of other cities across the world, the Plovdiv Night provokes the local art community – gallery and museums directors, curators and artists – to present their work in the most attractive and appealing way. Each year it hosts a wide variety of exhibitions, interactive performances, screenings, workshops, concerts, live events and others, in a format accessible to a wider public. Audiences this year will have a chance to attend a program of 20 hours which will run simultaneously in 58 locations, across two days. The event is expected to attract an audience of 25 000.
The highlights this year include: a presentation of Ivan Moudov’s MUSIZ – Museum for Contemporary Art at the Regional Museum of History / Bulgarian Reunion Hall; Peep Show – a performance by Mariela Gemisheva at Sariev Gallery; a special guest appearance by the Berlin-based group Club Real in the parking lot of restaurant Fresh; Vassil Tuchkov’s installation The Living Museum in a former tobacco warehouse; Japanese Night at the Centre for Contemporary History and the photo exhibition “Dimitar Kavra: Plovdiv’s Photo Annalist” at the Plovdiv State Archives.
The new visual identity of the Night of Museums and Galleries is minimalist, typography-based and content-driven, and was developed by the Post-studio for Visual Culture.
Students in art management and the humanities from different universities will get a chance to acquire hands-on skills and experience in the Night’s Internship Program.
The Night of Museums and Galleries is organized by the Open Arts Foundation in co-operation with the Municipality of Plovdiv and the support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation and Vivacom.
