Bulgaria's Danube City of Rousse to Have Second Navigable River

Sofia News Agency

The administration of Bulgaria's largest Danube city of Rousse is currently considering a project for widening the estuary of the Rusenski Lom River in order to make navigable a three-kilometer stretch of it.

The news was announced by the Rousse Mayor Bozhidar Yotov himself after he returned from his visit to Germany and the Netherlands.

The widening of the Rusenski Lom estuary will make the river navigable for small barges, boats, and yachts, and will also serve to protect the areas from floods by gathering a larger amount of water.

The project is also expected to make the Rusenski Lom a place for recreation and tourism for the residents and visitors of Rousse.

The endeavor is estimated to cost about EUR 50 M, which are expected to come from a low-interest loan from a German bank.

German experts are going to arrive in Rousse in the fall to consult the municipal administration regarding the execution of the project, and the possibility of getting EU funding.
