International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development.
The Day also aims to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world's mountains and highlands.
The Mountain Day was officially announced for 'International Mountain Day' by UN General Assembly on December 11, 4 years ago.
After the great success of UN International Year of Mountains in 2002 the global awareness of the importance of mountains increased.
National committees in 78 countries and strengthened alliances established International Partnership for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions, known as the 'Mountain Partnership'.
FAO was the designated lead coordinating agency for International Year of Mountains and is mandated to lead observance of International Mountain Day.
Bulgaria marks the International Mountain Day with a protest against overbuild in mountains and illegal cutting of forests.
The event will take place on 'St Nedelia' square, Sofia.
