Antique Swimming Pool Excavated Near Svishtov

A unique antique Roman swimming pool emerged from the ruins of Novae - an ancient town in the vicinity of Svishtov. The discovery was made by Polish archeologist Dr. Andrjei Biernadski, who has been working on the excavations since mid June. Historians' term for the ancient pool is "nymphaeum." "No equivalent of this pool has been excavated in Bulgaria so far," said archeologist Pavlina Vladkova, who has been exploring Novae for the past 20 years.
The nymphaeum has a portal, which, seemingly, was decorated with Roman statues. The only place in the world where archeologists have dug out a similar facility is Lambesi, Africa. Vladkova told that in Antiquity Novae was the dwelling place of First Italic Legion. Roman baths were built there in the beginning of the 2nd century BC that spread over more than 6000 square metres. The nymphaeum most probably was gift to the soldiers, a recognition of their exploits in the Dacian Wars (101-106 AD), the archeologists said.
