A ski zone develops new opportunities for tourism in Tryavna

The construction of the project will take ten years, and will probably be developed in the direction of Maglidzh municipality.

A Detailed structure plan of the project “Ski zone Tryavna municipality” is already completed. Tryavna Municipality aims to examine the opportunities for development of winter tourism in the region. The plan offers the project for the construction of the ski zone to be executed on three stages, by creating four main bodies and several equipments to service it. The bed capacity will be based in Tryavna and Plyachkovtsi towns. According to preliminary assessment the complete realization of the project will cost over 35,5 million BGN.

A Detailed structure plan of the project “Ski zone Tryavna municipality” is already completed. Tryavna Municipality aims to examine the opportunities for development of winter tourism in the region. The plan aims to complete the traditional tourism opportunities, which are common for the mountain settlement. This is the main idea of the company that has legally won the competition for the project – “Ivis project and design” Ltd..
Tryavna is a popular destination for cognitive, religious and cultural tourism. Its popularity is due to the fact that the town has preserved ethnographic monuments and cultural inheritance of Bulgaria. Winter tourism is still not well developed, because of the lack of good communication network. That is why the structure plan develops additional forms of tourism. As a whole the territory of the region offers numerous tourism routes, of local and national significance. These routes are also considered in the detailed structure plan of the region, as they are part of the Nature Park “Bulgarka”.
The detailed structure plan of ski zone Tryavna was developed according to the conception with territory models for development, approved in 2005.

This concept formed the territory impact of the project. It will be situated on 1600 metres above the sea level, right below “Balgarka” peak and will take 450 hectares of land.
The concept defines the appropriate land plots for the development of the zone. The impact of the sun, the declination of the terrain, the average snow cover and water springs to support snow cannons for artificial snow were also examined. All conditions that prove the opportunity for construction of a ski zone in the region have been considered.

The project team offers development of the territory, based on the same concept, as follows:
- Construction of ski slopes on two stages with a total length of 10 102 and a capacity of 2590 skiers.
- Construction of cable lift, again on two stages with a total length of 8691 metres and capacity of 6800 to 9000 people per hour.
Additional sites are planned to support the tourists, as information service, park maintenance, trade, food and beverage, safety and security. The infrastructure of the territory will be supported by new road network and rehabilitation of the already existed roads. At the same time, electricity and water supply networks are also of great importance for the project.


The main goals of the construction plan are:
- The planning of optimal space and functional tourism structure;
- Unity with the natural and anthropogenic gifts;
- Minimal and restricted in time human impact;
- Economy efficiency of the offered events;
- Complete construction and management;

The project is developed in three stages:
Detailed structure plan for ten years, which gives decisions for the transport network, the functional purpose and the localization of buildings and equipment. The model for the development of the ski slopes and equipment, the accommodation sites, distribution of the tourism flow, public services, engineer security of snow sites, the rules and norms for the detailed structure planning of the individual bodies are also stated in the plan.
Eco assessment of the territory, included in the plans is also a part of the project. It includes climate characteristics, air conditions, morphologic structure and geology, lands and soils, land shaft, biological diversity, waste, cultural- historical inheritance, characteristics of the environment, which can be damaged and the possible impact on the components of the nature.

* The realization of the project is planned to be completed in three stages. Four ski zones and several equipment system to service them.
- The first stage is planned to be competed in five years. During the first year rehabilitation and construction of a road network from the junction of the road Plachkovtsi – Radevtsi – Krastets station to the Vikanata site is planned to be completed.
During the second year seat lift equipment from Vikina rock and a drag lift under Bulgarka peak will be constructed together with seat lifts from Solishta site along slope 1a and 1b.
- The second stage includes the period from the sixth till the tenth year. During the sixth year the construction of a seat lift from Kozarka site to Bulgarka peak. During the seventh year a ski slope and a road connection from Stoevtsi neighbourhood to Kozarka site will be completed. Between the seventh and the eight tenth years snow canons will be installed.
- During the third stage a cabin lift will be constructed to connect Krastets station with Vikanata skala (rock) site, where the now existing station of Mountain Risqué Service is situated. This is also a natural starting point for walking tours to Balgarka peak, which is known for its long preserving snow cover.

37, 65 hectares of the land which will be included in the project is owned by the municipal, 6, 48 hectares is owned by the government, 0, 78 hectares are private property.

The cabin lift is the most expensive equipment in the whole project that is why it is planned for the third stage of the plans.
The economy analysis of the project shows the investments needed for the different stages of the project. The first stage will cost 11 108 million BGN, the second- 7, 5 million BGN and the third stage – 17 million BGN.
Accommodation sites are also planed to be supplied in service of tourists.
The project plans development of hotel accommodation of different category in Tryavna and Plyachkovtsi towns. Small hotels with up to 50 beds will be a priority.
