Varna to follow Sofia example

Sofia Echo, June 20, 2008

Varna municipality said it looked at Sofia as an example for its decision to introduce a paid-parking zone in the city. Different from Sofia's "blue zone" however, Varna decided to call it the "green zone", Bulgarian-language zagrada.bg said.

Traffic was a major problem for the city and reason for the municipality to decide to establish three zones for paid parking in the city, deputy mayor Svilen Kraychev told Bulgarian news agency BTA.

Learning from the Sofia Administrative Court ruling that only a mayor could adopt paid parking regulations, Varna announced that its mayor ordered the regulation.

The three zones were in the area of city hall, the central square Nezavisimost (Independence) and around the central post office, zagrada.bg said.

Parking in the zone would cost around one leva an hour. Those who live in the paid parking areas would be given the opportunity to buy a subscription at 10 leva a month.
