Bulgaria Pays Tribute to National Heroes

Novinite.com, 02 June 2007

On Saturday, June, 02 Bulgaria marks the 131-st anniversary of the heroic death of the Bulgarian revolutionary and poet Hristo Botev and his detachment.

At 12 o'clock sharp, with a 5-minute silence and hooters knelling, Bulgarian people remain still and bow heads to commemorate the heroes of the country who had fallen victims to the national freedom.

On the eve of the solemn day, June 2, statesmen and ordinary people gather in the town of Vratsa, where the biggest monument of Botev towers above the whole town to commemorate the self-sacrifice of the brave men.

As every year, thousands of people climb to the Okolchitsa Peak, in the Vratsa mountainous area, where the detachment of Bulgarian revolutionary and poet Hristo Botev had passed their last 120 km before dying heroically for the homeland.

Every year thousands of people trod that route of ancestors to remember the heroes of Bulgaria, who gave their lives for their country after the April Uprising had been ferociously suppressed.
