New Finds in Perperikon Attract Tourists

Standart daily, 20 Sept.

New unique finds at Perperikon attract an increasing number of tourists. After three months of excavations, yesterday Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov officially announced the end of the archaeological summer at the cult site near Kurdjali.

"For these 90 days of intensive work the team has achieved highly interesting results. After three years of hard work the whole western part of the Perperikon acropolis was unearthed, the archaeologist said.

Dozens of altars from the Bronze and Early Iron age - 2000-1000 BC - have been discovered. The experts have come across superb ceramic works adorned with many decorative solar signs and gorgeous floral-geometrical ornamentation.
The gems of this year's excavation works are dated back to 3-5 century AD, when Perperikon turned into a splendid town. The huge water reservoir with a capacity of 270,000 liters, as well as other urban facilities which are not completely unearthed yet, prove that the population of Perperikon numbered dozens of thousands of people at that time.

Perperikon had a well-built infrastructure comprising temples, imposing buildings and palaces.
