20 mufflons of the elite in Bulgaria

The game-breeding reserve in Zhenda village, Kardjali district, imported 20 mufflons of the elite from Brioni Island, Croatia. The animals were ordered by the State Agency of Forests previous year. They were bred in their natural habitat on the island.

“We are now in process of developing a new genofond for a blood refreshment of the population to avoid the reproduction between the related animals, inhabiting Bulgaria”, said the chief of the game-breeding reserve Fikri Ramadanov.

The first mufflon population was imported in Bulgaria from Hungary 30 years ago. The animals were settled on island in Studen kladenets dam.

Five of the new mufflons are male at age of 2 to 5 years. The others are female and 90% of them have already given a birth.

Each one of the new coming animals has certificate. They have passed the boundary inspection of veterinary control. They will be under quarantine for 45 days. After that the animal will be set free with the existing population.
