One of the key battles in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 was the defense of the Shipka pass. The most dramatic of those took place from the 21st to the 26th of August (or from the 9th to the 14th of August old style) 130 years ago. In the valley of Russenski Lom, Northeastern Bulgaria, in the vicinity of the village of Ivanovo, stands a complex of churches, chapels, and monasteries carved in the rocks and developed in the course of many centuries. The complex is known as the Ivanovo Rock Churches – one of the nine Bulgarian monuments included in the UNESCO list of world culture and historical heritage.

The Vidin international fair will be opened today at 9 p.m
The event will be held in the “Nora Pisanti” park. More than 100 local and guest companies will participate with their products in the fair. The trade pavilions are all set.
The exhibition is on an area of 50 decares.
The fair will continue till September 8. It will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The entrance is free.

Bulgarian archaeologists discovered a Christian necropolis outside the ruins of the medieval fortress near the rock sanctuary of Perperikon, located in southern Bulgaria near the town of Kardzhali.
The team lead by Nikolay Ovcharov found 15 tombs dating back to the 14th century, most likely the resting place of the fortress' defenders executed following its siege by Turkish emir Orhan in 1362.

Folk singers from Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and Macedonia will take part in the 15th international folk song festival Pirin Folk from 7 through 9 August in the town of Sandanski.
A total of 35 singers will have to try and impress the jury with their vocal abilities on the first night of the festival. The second night will be dedicated to composers, who will present their author songs.
