The 12th issue of Surva, the International Festival of the Masquerade games in Pernik, takes place on the 26th and 27th of January. This is one of the most prestigious international folklore festivals. The event presents the national masquerade games and customs, which are well preserved in Bulgaria since the antiquity.

5000 people are expected to take part in the festival this year, which is a record-breaking number of the participants. There will be 40 foreign groups from 13 countries like...

The Orthodox Church celebrates on January 18 the day of St. Atanasius, in Bulgarian Atanasovden.
According to local beliefs, St. Atanasius is the ruler of snow and ice. This holiday is also known as the Mid-winter Day.
When it's St. Athanasius Day, the spring is on its way. St. Atanasius' Day honors the patron of blacksmiths and he symbolizes immortality.

In some parts of Bulgaria single young men and women go out to the meadows that day and tie swings, sway, sing or dance folklore dances....

Only 50 km from Varna a real paradise for snow lovers appears.
The ski track is located in Valchi Dol, in “Koshu Bair” area and attracts skiers and snowboarders from Varna and Dobrich. Many people prefer going there in the weekend, because the prices are really affordable. The ski track is 250 metres long; keeping in mind there is a project that foresees the construction of 100 metres more. The area attracts about 200 keen sport lovers during holidays. Round 1,500 Russian tourists preferred Pamporovo ski resort for spending their winter vacation.
The Russians are one third from all foreigners in the resort. According to local tour operators, Pamporovo attracts more and more wealthy Russians.

There won’t be signed an agreement during the visit of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to Bulgaria because it was already signed in May 2007, when we paid a visit with the Government delegation, chairperson of the Bulgaria’s State Agency for Tourism Aneliya Krushkova said in an interview to BNR. State Agency of Tourism organizes presentation of Bulgaria as a tourist destination on expositions in Helsinki and Vienna, which will occur from 17 to 20 January.
MATKA expo in Helsinki, Finland is the biggest tourismevent in Northern Europe and the Baltics.
MATKA'2007 exposers were 1126 from 59 countries. Visitors were over 85, 953 among which 16, 910 professionals in the tourism branch.
Through the expo's third day, visitors hit the record amount of 34,000 people.

By the end of January 2008, the Transport and Communications Ministry would prepare a memorandum on the construction of a new container terminal in Varna and the transformation of the Varna East Port into a tourist area, Varna municipal council chair Borislav Goutsanov said.

A joint company of Varna municipality and the state will manage the new port infrastructure, investor.bg said. Private companies could also take part in the new company, but the maximum share of the private companies...

“The winter sports conditions in Vratsa Balkan Mountain are perfect”, said the Focus News reporter in Vratsa. The chairman of “Veslets” tourists association, Georgi Petkov, said that the snow cover on the ski runs is more than 170 cm and the pistes are well maintained. The two tows are operating since today. They will work from 10 AM to 01 PM from Monday till Friday and from 10 AM to 04.30 PM during the weekend. Right after the first snow fall there were about 50 to 150 winter sports lovers on...

A procedure for the construction of a new passenger terminal and taxiway at the Plovdiv airport has been initiated, Bulgarian transport minister Petar Mutafchiev said on Tuesday. The general development plan of the airport will be drafted by the end of the year. A new tower for the needs of the air traffic control authority will be built by mid-'09.
