Extremely Rare Orchid Blossoms in Bulgaria

A very rare orchid “Malipoen Venus' Shoe” (Paphiopedilum malipoense) has blossomed in the Botanical garden of Bulgarian academy of science, informed BNR.

The Chinese call the flower the “Nephrite slipper” orchid.

The orchid is described in 1984 under a herbarium model collected in 1947. The flower could be found in very difficult to access areas in China and in the most northern regions of Viet Nam. It inhabits steep rocky limy hills between 570 and 1600 m above sea level.

Plovdiv Hosts Prestigious Agro 2008 Forum

A total of 722 firms from 39 countries had applied for participation at the most prestigious agriculture forum of South-Eastern Europe.
The forum will take place in the fair complex of Plovdiv city starting from February 19 until 23rd.

The booked area for Agra 2008 is with almost 40% more compared to last year. The event will be opened by Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Nihat Kabil.

Bulgaria's Srebarna Nature Reserve Goes Under NATURA 2000

Srebarna Nature Reserve was announced for protected area according to the Law for Biological Diversity, after the Environmental Ministry published on Wednesday, February 6 about 6 zones that goes under NATURA 2000 ecology network.

The other five protected areas are: 'Island next to Gorni Tsibar', 'Tsibar's marsh', Gorni Dubnik - Telish', 'Chairya' (near Dobrich city), 'Breeding pool - Orsoya'.

The mayor of Bansko discussed the perspectives of the town with the British ambassador

The mayor of Bansko, Mr. Alexander Kravarov, and the head of the municipal council, Mr. Gerogie Ikonomov, met the British ambassador in Bulgaria, Mr. Steve Williams and the deputy consul Denis Baker. The meeting took place yesterday and was initiated by the British ambassador. The mayor of Bansko announced that the British ambassador was interested in the perspectives of Bansko as a tourist destination, because many of the tourists visiting Bansko are British.

Bulgarian school students design virtual tour of Perperikon

Bulgaria will present a virtual tour of Perperikon at the Holiday, Tourism and Leisure Fair in Brussels, held on February 7-11 2008.

Students from two schools in Kardjali in southeastern Bulgaria, the region where Perperikon is located, designed the virtual tour, Dnevnik daily said.

The virtual tour includes full information on the ancient rock town, from its establishment, through the early Iron Age, until the late Middle Ages.
